The 2008 awards mark 10 years of this marvellous project to encourage young people to read for pleasure. Once again around 300 pupils from 8 schools in South Lanarkshire voted for the winning book from this year's short list. The pupils read the four short listed titles before voting on 13 March for their favourite book. The result was kept secret until the envelope was opened at the Award Ceremony on Monday 17 March in Rutherglen Town Hall.
All of the pupils involved attended the ceremony to hear the result and had the opportunity to ask questions of all four authors. The authors visited 2 schools each before the award ceremony.
This year's short list was:
| Tim Bowler | Frozen fire |
| Rosemary Hayes | Mixing it |
| J A Henderson | Bunker 10 |
| Marcus Sedgwick | My swordhand is singing |
Marcus Sedgwick's book 'My swordhand is singing' recently won the Booktrust Teenage Prize. Both Marcus Sedgwick and Tim Bowler have been nominated for the South Lanarkshire Book Award previously; Tim Bowler won the South Lanarkshire Book Award in 2002 with his book 'Storm catchers'.
South Lanarkshire libraries gratefully acknowledge the sponsorship of local businesses Tunnock's of Uddingston, Rolls Royce and Waterstone's, East Kilbride. We are also grateful for the support of publishers Frances Lincoln, Orion Children's Books and Oxford University Press.
